Women’s Tennis Sweeps Middlebury and Williams For First Time In Program History

BRUNSWICK, Maine – For the first time in program history the Bowdoin women’s tennis team swept Williams and Middlebury in the same regular season schedule.

The Polar Bears (11-6, 8-2 NESCAC) took down Williams 5-2 on Saturday. Bowdoin battled to pin a 4-3 setback on the Panthers on Sunday.

Williams Match Highlights

  • Bowdoin swept doubles to earn the point. Suzanne Pogorelec and Cara Hung finished 6-2 at #2, while Zoe Sun and Bella Hartung went 6-3 at #1. Caroline Stuhlfaut and Naomi Williams completed the sweep at #3 (7-50.
  • The Polar Bears comfortably won four singles matches to clinch the victory.
  • Hung posted at 6-1, 6-3 at #1 and Pogorelec went 6-3, 6-4 at #2.
  • Sun and Stuhlfaut both cruised at #4 and #4, respectively. Sun posted a 6-0, 6-1. Stuhlfaut finished 6-1, 6-2.

Middlebury Match Highlights

  • Bowdoin fell behind 1-0 after the Panthers earned the doubles point.
  • Matches on courts one through five all went to three sets.
  • After dropping the first set, Pogorelec came back to post Bowdoin’s first point at #2 (4-6, 6-2, 6-3).
  • Hartung finished minutes later at #3 (7-6, 3-6, 6-1).
  • At #5, Stuhlfaut fought her way to a win that included a 7-5 third set tiebreaker (6-0, 2-6, 7-6).
  • Sun clinched the match for Bowdoin in the final singles pairing on court #4. After trailing 5-0 in the first set, Sun stormed back to win the set 7-6. Ren Barton forced a deciding third set after winning the second 6-3. Sun shut the door with a 6-1 finish.

Up Next

The Polar Bears locked in the #2 seed for the conference tournament with an 8-2 record. Middlebury has a matching record in conference play, but Bowdoin has the head-to-head tiebreaker. The NESCAC Championship is being hosted by Middlebury on May 1-3.
