Women’s Tennis Advances to First-Ever NESCAC Championship Final

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Bowdoin College women’s tennis team will play in the NESCAC championship match for the first time in program history after a 4-0 win over Middlebury in the conference semifinals Saturday. The Polar Bears (13-6) advance to the title match against top-seeded Wesleyan at 11:00 a.m. Sunday.

Match Highlights

  • A pair of doubles wins got Bowdoin out on the right foot, giving the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead thanks to wins from Zoe Sun/Bella Hartung (6-4) and Caroline Stuhlfaut/Naomi Williams (7-5)
  • A trio of straight-set wins put the Polar Bears over the top as the first three completed matches all went Bowdoin’s way.
  • Hartung (6-1, 6-1) at number three and Stuhlfaut (6-4, 6-4) at number five put Bowdoin on the brink and Sun closed it out with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at number four.

Up Next

  • Bowdoin will play in the NESCAC title match for the first time, against Wesleyan at 11:00 a.m. in Vermont. The Cardinals took the regular season meeting between the teams, 5-2, on April 12.
  • The Polar Bears did finish as runners-up at NESCACs in 2004 (flighted championship) but that was prior to the institution of the bracketed team championship that began in 2006.
