MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Middlebury College baseball team rallied from an 11-1 deficit in the fifth inning to take a walk-off 14-11 shootout over Bowdoin in game one of the NESCAC quarterfinal series Friday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (15-20) will have to sweep a doubleheader tomorrow against Middlebury (20-12) to keep their season alive. The Panthers need just one win to advance to next week’s championship weekend.
Game Highlights
- A Will Logue homer and three-run double by Finn Cahill gave Bowdoin a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
- The Polar Bears took advantage of a pair of Panther errors to score three runs in the fourth and added four more in the fifth on RBI hits from Logue and Liam Farley to lead 11-1.
- Middlebury’s offense awoke in the bottom of the fifth, however, as two three-run homers contributed to an eight-run frame that trimmed the lead to 11-9.
- A single run in the seventh cut the lead to 11-10 and Middlebury scored to tie it in the ninth on a double. A few batters later a long fly ball down the left field line was ruled a three-run, game-winning homer for the hosts, capping the dramatic comeback.
By The Numbers
- Finn Cahill went 3-4 with three RBI, a walk, and two runs scored while Will Bordes went 4-6 for Bowdoin.
- Will Logue, Liam Farley, and Wim Nook each had multi-hit games.
- Reliever Jake Kavanaugh was the most effective Bowdoin pitcher in the game, tossing 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run.
