BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team handed Tufts its first conference loss of the season in a 9-1 five-inning game to close out the series on Friday night.
The Polar Bears are 17-4 (3-3 NESCAC) after dropping game one by a 10-2 margin. The Jumbos are 16-4 (5-1 NESCAC).
Game One Highlights
- Bowdoin snuck a run home in the first inning as Maddie Paschke put the ball in play to third and a muffed throw allowed Paschke to remain on base and Anika Ewert to score.
- Lauryn Horita gave Tufts a 4-1 lead in the third with one swing of the bat, hitting a 225 foot homer over the fence in right center.
- Tufts added two more runs in the fourth.
- Bowdoin hung around with a long foul popout by Elise Siciliano down the right field line that allowed Margaret Flannery-Goodman to score.
- Tufts scored four unanswered runs to finish the game off in six innings.
- Ewert, Paschke, Flannery-Goodman, Chloe Garcia, and Sammie Wright all had hits.
- Maddie Current suffered the loss in the circle with 3.1 innings of work and six earned runs with three strikeouts.
Game Two Highlights
- Bowdoin’s bats came alive in game two and patient at-bats produced eight total walks in the game.
- Paschke got Bowdoin started with an RBI single through the right side in the first inning and Flannery-Goodman singled to center in the second to plate two more runs.
- The Jumbos made it 3-1 with an RBI single in the top of the third.
- Bowdoin answered in the bottom half of the inning. Penelope Fong-Picariello hit a two-run single to center and the initiated a double steal that allowed Ewert to score. Paschke added another RBI single to cap the inning’s scoring.
- The Polar Bears were able to walk it off in the fifth as Flannery-Goodman hit a bases-loaded ball that allowed Kaitlyn Fado to score and Paschke followed up with a similar play to make it 9-1.
- Sophia Hahn pitched four innings and allowed only one run off ten hits with a pair of K’s.
- Kathleen Hester entered the game with a bases-loaded no out situation and retired the side without allowing a hit or run.
- Fong-Picariello and Paschke both had a pair of hits. Ewert scored four runs.
