BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team played to a tight 2-1 loss in its NESCAC Quarterfinal game against Williams on Saturday morning.
The Polar Bears (27-9) earned the four seed for the conference tournament and dropped the single elimination game to the Ephs (23-16) who entered the postseason as the #5.
Game Highlights
- The Ephs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a bases loaded walk. With one out and the bases loaded, Maddie Current got out of the inning without any more damage after a groundout play to home and flyout.
- Bowdoin looked to tie the game in the bottom half of the frame with the bases loaded and two outs, but were unable to convert.
- With one out and runners on first and second in the fourth, Kathleen Hester took the rubber and retired the next two batters to keep it 1-0.
- Williams added a key insurance run in the top of the fifth off Haley Barrett’s RBI single to left.
- With two on and two out in the sixth, Elise Siciliano hit a bloop single to shortstop that allowed the runner to score from third and make it 2-1.
- Bowdoin retired the side in the top of the seventh to keep its hopes alive. The Polar Bears again had bases loaded with two outs, but Rosie Panenka’s flare to left center couldn’t tail away fast enough to drop for a game-tying single.
By The Numbers
- Siciliano went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- Baylie Wong and Maddie Paschke each had a hit.
- Penelope Fong-Picariello had a stolen base.
- Current suffered the loss with 3.1 innings of work and three hits allowed. Hester allowed one hit and one run. Each pitcher recorded one strikeout.

Bowdoin will wait and see what happens around the country with hopes of an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
