BRUNSWICK, Maine – Senior outside hitter Skye LaMendola surpassed 1,000 career kills as the Bowdoin volleyball team swept Amherst 3-0 on Friday Night. The Polar Bears had set wins of 25-13 and 25-22 before a thrilling 26-24 third set to rise to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the NESCAC while the Mammoths dropped to 8-7 overall and 1-5 in the loop.
Game Highlights
- The Polar Bears forced two Amherst timeouts in a convincing first set and went on a 9-0 run after tying the set at 8-all before six of the last seven points for a 25-13 decision.
- Bowdoin trailed 20-18 late in the second set before getting crucial kills from LaMendola, Zoe Ryu and the final two kills by Tamara Gisiger for a 25-22 edge in the second set.
- The third set proved to be the most challenging for the home squad, trailing by as many as seven points (12-5) and did not lead the set until a service ace by Cameron Shelly made it 25-24 followed up by a block by Zyu to complete the sweep.
By The Numbers
- With seven kills in the match, LaMendola became just the sixth player in program history to reach the 1,000-kill milestone, joining Christy Jewett ’16, Caroline Flaharty ’20, Gillian Page ’10, Kristin Hanczor ’12, and Melissa Haskell ’13.
- Ryu led the attack as the lone Polar Bear to reach double-digit kills with 13 as Tamara Gisiger added nine and Alison Smith accounted for seven on .538 hitting.
- Molly Dunn (17) and Cameron Shelly (13) paced the offense in assists with Dunn and LaMendola leading the team with eight digs, respectively.
