Grab your kayak, canoe, or even paddleboard and join Community Engagement Manager/ experienced birder, Tyler Pascocello for a short paddle through Nequasset Lake to a private property with a KELT held conservation easement. This private land is managed for grassland bird habitat and we will plan to do a short walk right from the shore of Nequasset to a beautiful open field. This location is known for having plentiful populations of bobolinks and other grassland birds. We will then be joined by Maine Master Naturalist, Jane Harrison, who volunteers with Ag Allies, an organization dedicated to working with local landowners to help manage their land for grassland bird habitat. Jane will share plenty of interesting knowledge about grassland birds and highlight what local land owners can do to help protect these unique species of birds.
The paddle to the conservation easement is short and welcoming to paddlers of all skill levels, with the paddle being less than a mile each way in very calm waters. We’ll paddle through a short inlet and just enter the northern opening of Nequasset Lake. Along this paddle, expect to see plenty of wildlife like loons, eagles, herons, ospreys, muskrats and many more! We recommend bringing a pair of binoculars, especially for the walk through the field.
