Polar Bears Sweep Bobcats In NESCAC Softball Series

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team earned its first NESCAC sweep with a pair of home victories over Bates on Sunday afternoon.

The Polar Bears are 19-4 with a 5-3 record in NESCAC play. The Bobcats are 8-11 (1-5 NESCAC). Bowdoin won a tight 4-1 game one before pinning a 12-6 loss on Bates in game two.

Game One Highlights

  • Bates got on the board in the first inning after Maya Lee hit a leadoff single through the left side and then stole second to be in scoring position. Isabel Bettencourt doubled to right and plated Lee.
  • Bowdoin trailed until the fourth inning when Maddie Paschke hit a leadoff homer to left.
  • The Polar Bears took the lead in the fifth after an error allowed Elise Siciliano to score. Penelope Fong-Picariello drove in a run with a groundout and Anika Ewert scored on a passed ball.
  • Maddie Current pitched all seven innings with five hits allowed and eight strikeouts.
  • Ewert, Fong-Picariello, Paschke, Siciliano, and Sammie Wright all had hits.

Game Two Highlights

  • Bates put Bowdoin in an early hole with a three-run top of the first. The Polar Bears answered with a matching number in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Fong-Picariello and Rosie Panenka both hit RBI singles and Wright had a sacrifice fly.
  • The Bobcats took a one-run lead in the following inning, but it was the last time Bowdoin trailed.
  • The Polar Bears scored eight runs. Fong-Picariello, Margaret Flannery-Goodman, and Ewert all had RBI singles. Paschke hit a two-run single. Wright hit her second homerun of the season.
  • Bates could not dig itself out after the second inning and found singular runs in both the fourth and seventh innings.
  • Flannery-Goodman had another RBI in the fifth.
  • Kathleen Hester settled in after the first inning and pitched a complete nine-hit game. The junior fanned six batters and caught the final out of the game to ensure the victory.
  • Ewert went 3-for-3 at the plate and Fong-Picariello hit 2-for-4.
  • Wright paced the team with four RBI.
