Softball Opens Season With Two Win Tuesday

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team opened the season with a pair of high-scoring wins over Saint Joseph’s College and Ohio Wesleyan.

Bowdoin opens the year 2-0 after flying to Florida to topple in-state competition Saint Joseph’s (2-3) by a 12-4 margin in a six-inning game one. The Polar Bears outran Ohio Wesleyan (2-2) in game two to win 13-7.

Game One Highlights

  • Bowdoin surrendered a two-run single up the middle in the first inning, but rattled off seven straight runs in response.
  • Margarete Flannery-Goodman made her first collegiate hit a two-run double to left field. Maddie Paschke added an RBI single.
  • In the second, Anika Ewert singled to left, plating Kaitlyn Fado. Flannery-Goodman added an RBI groundout.
  • Penelope Fong-Picariello also had an RBI groundout in the fourth and Ewert added a run-producing single in the fifth.
  • The Monks found a couple more runs in the top of the sixth, but Bowdoin closed out the game in bottom of the inning.
  • Paschke’s ball to third allowed a pair of runs to score. Ellie Sullivan tagged an RBI double to center and Ewert hit a walk-off single.
  • Maddie Current pitched a complete game with four runs off six hits. Current fanned four batters.
  • Ewert went 4-for-4 with three RBI.
  • Flannery-Goodman went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
  • Elise Siciliano was 2-for-2 at the plate.

Game Two Highlights

  • Bowdoin scored in the top of the first off Reilly Parga’s single to shortstop.
  • Ohio Wesleyan responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
  • Bowdoin regained the lead with a five-run second. Ewert and Rosie Panenka each had RBI singles. Siciliano plated a pair and Parga added another.
  • OWU tied the game in response, but Bowdoin pushed ahead again in the fourth as Panenka hit a two-run double to left.
  • The home team answered in the bottom of the fourth to pull within one, but that was their last run of the game.
  • Bowdoin put two runs on the board in both the fifth and sixth innings.
  • Parga, Ewert, and Panenka all went 2-for-4.
  • Ava Biasotti started and pitched a pair of innings with seven hits allowed.
  • Sophia Hahn saw her first action as a Polar Bear with two innings of work and four hits allowed.
  • Kathleen Hester earned the save with three innings in the circle and two hits allowed with a strikeout and no runs.
