Men’s Tennis Splits Opening Matches of California Trip

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Bowdoin College men’s tennis team split its first two matches on its spring break trip, defeating Chapman 7-0 before falling to top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4-3. The seventh-ranked Polar Bears stand at 4-1 this spring.

Chapman Match Highlights

  • The Polar Bears secured the opening point by taking all three doubles flights. Mark Kneiss and Jackson Codd won 6-2 at No. 1, Kiran Garapati and Simon Catanzaro posted a 6-3 victory at No. 2, and Aden Dorros and Mick Tamas completed the doubles sweep with a 6-0 win at No. 3 to lock up the doubles point.
  • Bowdoin kept control in singles, winning five matches in straight sets. Kneiss dominated at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1, while Codd earned a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 3. Cameron Zia (No. 4) won 6-2, 6-2, Catanzaro (No. 5) took a 6-3, 6-1 result, and Andrew Mendelson (No. 6) also prevailed 6-3, 6-1.
  • At No. 2, Garapati provided the lone three-set contest, bouncing back after dropping the first set to defeat James Krantz, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4, in a match tiebreak, sealing the 7-0 sweep for the Polar Bears.

CMS Match Highlights

  • Bowdoin lost a tightly contested match to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 4-3, with several matches decided in third sets after the Polar Bears grabbed an early edge in doubles.
  • Bowdoin and CMS split the doubles point down to the wire. After Kneiss and Codd fell 6-2 at No. 1, the Polar Bears answered with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Simon Catanzaro and Kiran Garapati earned a 6-3 victory at second doubles, and Mick Tamas and Aden Dorros matched that score at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point and give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead.
  • In singles, CMS responded by taking four of six matches, including three that went the distance. Jackson Codd delivered Bowdoin a singles win in a marathon at No. 3, outlasting Sibi Raja 7-5, 6-7(7), 7-6(1). Andrew Mendelson also posted a strong straight-set result at No. 6, winning 6-3, 6-3.
