MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Bowdoin women’s lacrosse team rallied but fell short in an 11-6 season-opening loss to defending national champion Middlebury on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears begin the year 0-1 (0-1 NESCAC) as the Panthers start 1-0 (1-0 NESCAC).
Game Highlights
- Middlebury rattled off eight unanswered goals in the opening quarter to take a quick lead.
- The Polar Bears broke through four minutes into the second quarter. Grace Schorr passed above the heads of two defenders to find Annie Bermingham who fired a shot on net.
- Middlebury responded a minute later, but Bowdoin had the quarter’s final goal, scoring at 7:42, as Grace Harvey dodged a pair of defenders before finding net.
- Bowdoin carried momentum into the third with two goals to begin the frame, making it 9-4. Tate Ryan finished off a feed from Miya Imaeda at 11:12 and Imaeda converted on a turnover to make a minute later.
- Alexandra Walker scored in the final 30 seconds of the quarter to push Middlebury into double digits.
- Harvey and Grace Schorr both scored in the fourth, sandwiching a Panthers goal, to make the score 11-6.
By the Numbers
- Hannah Rubin started the game for Bowdoin and Alexa Genua came in to play 51 minutes in relief. Genua made six saves and allowed six goals.
- Elizabeth Savage played the first three quarters for Middlebury with four goals and two saves. Annie Spring made a pair of saves and allowed two goals in the fourth.
- Harvey paced Bowdoin with two goals, two caused turnovers, and three draw controls.
- Courney McKenna had six caused turnovers and five ground balls.
- Haley Hamilton scored four goals for the Panthers.
- Middlebury had a 14-10 shots on goal advantage.
