THE ROAD TO MEDFORD

Bowdoin advanced to the conference semifinals for the first time since 2021 with a 2-0 victory over Wesleyan in last Saturday’s quarterfinals. Emily Ferguson and Charlotte Crawford scored just 66 seconds apart in the opening quarter, while goalkeeper Eva Filipponi made seven saves to preserve the shutout. The Polar Bears are making their 18th appearance in the NESCAC semifinals and enter the weekend having won nine of their last ten games, with their only loss during that stretch coming against unbeaten Tufts.

FAMILIAR FOES

Saturday’s matchup will be a rematch of a tightly contested regular-season meeting in Brunswick, where Middlebury edged Bowdoin 2-1 on September 26. The longtime rivals have met 12 times previously in the NESCAC Tournament, including eight championship games. Middlebury advanced to the semifinals with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Amherst, scoring the game-winner on a penalty stroke with just 48 seconds remaining.

POLAR BEARS BY THE NUMBERS

Emily Ferguson leads Bowdoin with ten goals this season, followed closely by Hannah Balmelli with nine, while Charlotte Crawford has contributed five goals and eight assists. Goalkeeper Eva Filipponi leads the NESCAC with nine shutouts and a 0.58 goals-against average. Bowdoin enters championship weekend ranked third in the NCAA Division III NPI rankings, with all four semifinalists ranked among the top six teams nationally in the NPI.
