BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin field hockey team won a key NESCAC and national matchup in a 1-0 victory over visiting Hamilton on Saturday.
The Polar Bears improve to 11-2 (6-2 NESCAC), while dropping the Continentals to 10-3 (5-3 NESCAC).
Game Highlights
- The first quarter highlighted a pair of stellar goalie saves on either end of the field. Six minutes into the game, Brighton McMahon and Evelyn Butorac built a two-on-goal breakaway opportunity. McMahon came straight down the center and drew Eva Filipponi. Filipponi timed the slide tackle to neutralize the shot attempt and send the rebound skittering toward the right post. Butorac barely tracked down the ball and layed out to put an open low-angle shot just wide of the goal mouth.
- Just over a minute later, Maddie Mrva ripped a shot from the top of the circle on a corner and Kelly Janssen got a lunging kicker on the ball to turn away the bid.
- Neither team allowed a shot in the second quarter as defense and midfield play dictated the game.
- Bowdoin broke through and scored the game’s lone goal less than five minutes into the third quarter. Following a scramble in front that included a diving Hamilton defender at the goal line, Charlotte Crawford poked the ball to Allie Straub who helped finish it across the line.
- Clara Noyes nearly added another Bowdoin goal in the final minutes of the game but was denied by Morgan Clarke’s defensive save.
By The Numbers
- Stingy defense on both sides allowed just five shots per team. Bowdoin put all five on net and the Continentals directed three toward Filipponi.
- Filipponi stopped all three shots she faced, including the breakaway in the first and a pair of attempts in the fourth.
- Janssen made three saves for Hamilton.
- Bowdoin held a narrow 4-3 edge in penalty corners.
