Gepfert and Lemieux Make USA Hockey 2017 New England District Girls Select Weekend

Congratulations to Topsham residents Caroline Gepfert and Lainie Lemieux for making the 2017 USA Hockey New England District Girls Select Weekend. Caroline is a freshman defender on the North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) Girls Varsity Prep and the Casco Bay U16 Girls Travel teams. Lainie is an 8th grader and plays at the forward position on the NYA Girls Varsity Prep and the Casco Bay U14A Girls Travel teams.

On October 23rd, Caroline and Lainie competed against the best girl hockey players in the New England District from birth years, 2002 and 2003. The day consisted of a grueling two session tryout held in Hooksett, NH. Formerly known as the New England Festival, the New England District Girls Select Weekend will take place March 24-26th, 2017 in Northford, Connecticut. During the weekend, Caroline and Lainie will be on teams, playing against each other, while showcasing their hockey skills and knowledge.

Caroline and the 2002 birth year girls will be competing for a spot at the 15 Year Old Player Development Camp to be held in St. Cloud, MN from July 8-12, 2017 at St Cloud State University. Lainie and the 2003 birth year girls will be eligible to attend the Eastern Select 14 Year Old Camp to be held in the Boston area sometime in late June 2017. Allocation to the camp is still to be determined.

The overall objective of USA Hockey’s Player Development Program is to select and train the most competitive women’s ice hockey teams representing the United States at the Olympic, National, National Junior and Select levels of international competition. This long process begins at the state level. The New England evaluators were coaches from Division 1, Division 3 New England Colleges, Prep schools, and USA Hockey National Development Team.

Very few players are selected from Maine each year. These two players have represented their state admirably over the past several years at multiple USA Hockey Camps and Festivals. They have learned new hockey skills, gained valuable life experiences, and have made new friends from the other New England states along the way. It will be exciting to follow these local girls’ progress in the years to come.
