Sea Dogs Game Recap-August 31st

Portland eliminated from the playoffs after game 1 loss

Portland, Maine) - Portland's magical run came to an end in game one of a doubleheader, losing 8-0. Trenton took the nightcap 4-2. The Sea Dogs needed to win all five games in this series to take the second playoff spot in the Eastern Division. 

 

Game 1 recap

 

The Thunder scored five runs early in the game off Mickey Pena (1-1) and clinched the second playoff spot in the Eastern Division with an 8-0 win the opener. Trenton will meet the Binghamton Mets on Wednesday night at Arm & Hammer Park in Game 1 of the Eastern Division Championship Series.

 

Tyler Austin knocked in the first run with a double to left-center field. In the third, Mason Williams led off with single and Ramon Flores followed with a run-scoring triple. Jose Pirela (2-for-4) launched a two-run homer over the Maine Monster, his 10th of the season.

 

Trenton extended their lead to 8-0 in the fifth on a two-run double by Gary Sanchez.

 

Pena lasted four innings, allowing five hits and six runs on three walks and three strikeouts.

 

Shane Greene (8-4) fired his first career complete game, giving up three hits with one walk and fanned five.

Game 2 recap

 

Kyle Roller blasted a two-run homer in the first and the Thunder held on for a 4-2 win. Ramon Flores and Jose Pirela added back-to-back RBI doubles in the third with one out.

 

 Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte (1-2) worked one and 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win for Trenton. Their starter

Caleb Smith pitched 3.2 innings on three hits and one run in his Double-A debut.

 

 

 

Terry Doyle (1-6) pitched his second complete game of the season, but suffered the loss. Doyle yielded six hits and runs without a walk and fanned six.

 

Danny Burawa pitched the final two innings for his fourth save of the season.

The Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder (Yankees affiliate) continue their five-game series on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. LHP Henry Owens (3-0, 1.09) makes his sixth start of the season for Portland. LHP Nik Turley (10-8, 3.90) gets the start for Trenton
