NESCAC Championship: Tufts 8, Bowdoin 0

MEDFORD, Mass. - Bowdoin's run in the NESCAC Tournament came to an end as the top-seeded Tufts University softball team earned an 8-0 win to clinch their eighth conference title Sunday morning.

The Polar Bears (30-14), who needed a sweep of the Jumbos on Sunday to earn the league title, finish as conference runners-up for the third time in program history. The Jumbos (38-3) earn the NESCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Bowdoin will await to hear their fate when selections are announced at 10:00 a.m. on Monday morning.

Hannah Wurgaft's lead-off single in the first inning proved to be Bowdoin's only hit of the game as Tufts pitcher Rebecca DiBiase retired the next 18 batters to shut down the Polar Bears. Michelle Cooprider gave the hosts a 1-0 lead on a home run in the bottom of the first, but it was a five-run third inning that proved to be the difference in the game.

The Polar Bears unwillingly aided the rally with a pair of key errors in the frame, leading to the five unearned runs. Bri Keenan delivered the big blow - a two-run double - as the Jumbos pushed their advantage to 6-0. Emily Beinecke delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth and Keenan clinched the eight-run win with a single in the sixth inning.

DiBiase walked none and struck out two over six innings for the win. Cooprider had four hits in the victory while Beinecke had three singles. DellaTorre took the loss for Bowdoin by permitting two earned runs over 2.2 frames of work. Julia Geaumont pitched three innings in relief, allowing two earned runs.
