BIG TOP SUCCESS WITH CIRCUS SMIRKUS FOR LOCAL TEEN

Freeport, Maine (July 13, 2016) - Thrill-seekers of all ages will gather under the big top tent to see talented youth group Circus Smirkus present its annual Freeport performances at the beginning of August. The 2016 "Big Top Tour” has a thirty member cast, all budding circus stars ages 11 to 18, and hailing from fifteen states. One of them is Sarah Norden, a local Maine Coast Waldorf High School Senior from Yarmouth. Sarah will be performing with Circus Smirkus this year as a clown and aerialist. Sarah became hooked on circus arts at a young age while attending Circus Smirkus summer camp. She then began training with the circus arts teacher, John Saccone, at Maine Coast Waldorf School and later at many venues throughout New England. This past year Sarah continued to perfect her craft by attending nightly classes at Circus Maine on Thompsons Point in Portland. This paid off when she auditioned this winter in Brattleboro, Vermont and earned a much coveted spot with the troupe for her second year! Headquartered in Greensboro Vermont, Circus Smirkus has received accolades from critics all over the world. Smirkus is a non-profit, award winning international youth circus founded with the mission of promoting the skills, culture and traditions of the traveling circus and inspiring youth to engage in life-changing adventures in the circus arts. Friends and fans can see Norden – and Circus Smirkus – in action, when this acclaimed international youth circus returns to Maine Coast Waldorf School (previously known as Merriconeag Waldorf School) for four "high-flying" performances this summer on August 2nd and 3rd at 1 and 6 p.m. in The Big Top Tent on Desert Road in Freeport. This year's fun-filled theme, "Up, HUP and Away: The Invention of Flight!" features aerials, acrobatics, wire walking, juggling, clowning, live music and an array of brilliant costumes. The audience will need to strap themselves in for a wild ride on cloud nine as performers swoop from one aerodynamic feat to the next. The show promises flights of fanciful fun, feathered with excitement, flapping in silliness, with an atmosphere of whimsy. The 2016 Circus Smirkus "Big Top Tour" will include 67 performances this summer between late June and mid-August in fourteen towns throughout the Northeast. Now in its 29th year, the Vermont-based organization has raised more than $2.5 million for non-profit partners. The local circus performances are a fundraiser for Maine Coast Waldorf School in Freeport. The school first brought Circus Smirkus to Freeport in 2005 as a fundraiser and outreach event. Within a few years the Magic Matinee Program was begun. This program has made it possible for hundreds of low income and underserved families to attend performances. It has become a much anticipated highlight for children throughout the mid coast and Portland areas to share in the magic of the circus and be inspired by the young performers. Tickets are available locally at Royal River Natural Foods on Route 1 in Freeport, by calling 1-877-SMIRKUS toll-free or visiting Smirkus.org. Tickets to Circus Smirkus are $21 for adults, $18 for children ages two to twelve and seniors. Children younger than age 2 are free on an adult's lap.
