TOPSHAM MAN RUNNING BOSTON MARATHON FOR STEPPING STRONG CENTER

Fundraising pasta dinner on Feb. 24

As a member of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Stepping Strong Marathon Team, Mark Bergeron from Topsham will run the historic Boston Marathon course from Hopkinton to Boston on April 16, 2018.

The public is invited to a Pasta Dinner fundraiser at Midcoast Presbyterian Church on February 24 from 5-7PM to support Mark and the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation, established at BWH following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to run the Boston Marathon,” says Mark. “I’ve been running marathons for more than a decade now, but have never run Boston.  My family and friends have been outstanding in their support of my efforts to raise money for the Stepping Strong team.”

Reny established the Center in her name nearly four years ago in gratitude to the caregivers at BWH who saved her life and legs following the tragic bombing. To date, the center has funded 14 physician–scientist research teams and raised more than $12 million to fuel innovative trauma research and clinical programs for civilian and military heroes who have suffered devastating traumatic injuries.

Mark and his wife, Karen, have a special connection to Brigham and Women’s.  During a 2012 illness, Karen was treated by BWH surgeon Dr. Matthew Carty, who provided healing and comfort.  Dr. Carty is one of the leading researchers at the Stepping Strong Center, seeking ways to recover normal limb function in amputees.

“We’re proud to be able to raise funds for pioneers like Dr. Carty as a small token of appreciation for the care and support that BWH provided to us,” say Mark and Karen.

Mark has raised more than half of his $7,500 goal for the Stepping Strong Team.  The February 24 pasta dinner is designed to build on that momentum. There will be pasta, a variety of sauces and toppings, salad, bread, and delicious desserts.

All ages are welcome; the cost is by donation at the door. All proceeds from the dinner go to the Stepping Strong Center. Mid-Coast Presbyterian Church is located at 84 Main Street, Topsham.
