Oasis Free Clinics Volunteer Receives Mary Cushman Award for Exceptional Humanitarian Service

The Maine Medical Association has presented the 2017 Mary Cushman Award for Exceptional Humanitarian Service as a Medical Volunteer to Richard P. Corbin, MD, former Medical Director at the Oasis Free Clinics.  The award is accompanied by a $1,000 contribution to a charitable organization to be chosen by the recipient and was presented to Dr. Corbin by Maine Medical Association President Charles Pattavina, MD at the Associations’ Annual Session on September 9.

The award is named for Mary Floyd Cushman, MD and is presented annually by the Maine Medical Association to recognize the humanitarian service of Maine medical volunteers.  Born in 1870, Mary Cushman lived in Castine and graduated from Eastern Maine Normal School, now the Maine Maritime Academy, in 1888 and from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1892.  She later practiced in Farmington and was the first woman member of the Maine State Medical Board.  Dr. Cushman received her medical missionary appointment at age 52 and spent the next 30 years in Angola, West Africa where she established a hospital and clinic.

Dr. Corbin has volunteered with Oasis sine 2014.  In addition to volunteering as a medical provider, he was the Medical Director and Board of Directors Chair.  Dr. Corbin is a retired pulmonologist who has served in leadership positions in the Maine Veterans Affairs Medical Center and other healthcare systems.

The Oasis Free Clinics provide free medical, mental health, and dental services, as well as prescription assistance, for uninsured, low-income residents of Freeport, Durham, Brunswick, Harpswell and Sagadahoc County (except Richmond which has a federally qualified health center).
