Internationally renowned world music & dance ensemble Libana returns to Maine to take part in the UUCB Concerts for a Cause series at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick on March 11 at 7:30pm.

When the Boston-based music group Libana formed 35 years ago, the term "world music" didn't exist. But Libana's founders knew they wanted to explore music by, for and about women around the globe. Since then, the group has traveled the world performing women's music from varied cultures around the world.

Libana founder Susan Robbins explains, “Libana uncovers and celebrates the songs and traditions of women’s communities around the world,  In many societies, music and dance are a daily part of women’s lives—in the home, in the field, and in the community, such as lullabies, work songs, and dances that accompany rites and rituals.”

From ancient traditions to contemporary creations, from the political to the spiritual, Libana's repertoire covers a vast musical spectrum expressed with stunning close a cappella vocals and an impressive palette of instruments: guitar, dumbek, accordion, oud, naqqara, clarinet and double bass.  Interweaving music, dance and story from such divergent cultures as the Balkans, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, South America and Europe, Libana's artistry inspires audiences with wonder at the beauty, breadth and wisdom of our world's cultural diversity and common humanity.

Libana's nine recordings and three songbooks have inspired the formation and the repertoires of song circles and choruses of all ages around the globe, and their music and performances have kindled a sense of joy, strength, healing and empowerment in several generations of listeners.

From Maine to California, Wyoming to Florida, Ontario to Nova Scotia -- and from Bulgaria to Greece to India to Morocco!--Libana has traversed the globe for 35 years celebrating the world's women. Libana believes deeply in the power of song, the rhythm of the drum, and the spirit of dance to connect people across vast cultural difference. Creating a bridge of the heart, their commitment to the artistic expression of the global community has inspired dynamic cross-cultural understanding, profound healing, and widespread peacebuilding.

Whether moved to tears by their beautiful soaring harmonies, or lifted out of you chair by their pounding rhythms and dance, you will leave Libana’s performance feeling uplifted.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.  Available at the church office (729-8515), Gulf of Maine Books, or online at http://libana.brownpapertickets.com.  Monies raised from the concert will benefit the programming of the church and local charities.
