Pro cyclists Stacher and Small to join Dempsey Challenge

LEWISTON, Maine (August 12, 2013) - Professional cyclists Ally Stacher of Banner Elk, NC and Carmen Small of Durango, Calif. have announced their intent to participate in the fifth annual Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen. Both women ride for Team Specialized lululemon and will join fellow pro Freddie Rodriguez in the non-competitive fundraising event scheduled for Oct. 12-13 in Lewiston, ME.
Stacher, who was once ranked third in the nation as a college wrestler, returns to the Challenge for the second straight year. She won this year’s French Broad Cycling Classic road race in Asheville, NC, took second place in the Tour of the Battenkill (NY), and placed fourth in a Nature Valley Grand Prix (MN) stage race. She is also a rock-climbing and yoga enthusiast.
Small, making her Dempsey Challenge debut, is a National Time Trial Champion and won a stage of Thüringen Rundfahrt this year. In 2010 she represented the United States at the UCI Road World Championships in Geelong, Australia. She was a competitive Nordic skier at age 12 and competed in two Junior Olympics in kayaking.
The Dempsey Challenge, which serves as the primary fundraiser for The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing, kicks off with Courage Fest on Friday, Oct. 11 showcasing local food and drink; a free screening of the Peloton Project, an inspiring film produced by Patrick Dempsey; and an after-party at Gritty McDuff’s L-A Brew Pub.
Participants will hit the streets in the 5K and 10K run/walk on October 12 and cycling routes of 10, 25, 50, 70 and 100 miles on October 13. All events will begin and end at Simard-Payne Memorial Park. The weekend will include a family friendly Festival in the Park which plays host to a Health and Wellness Expo, KidZone, vendor fair and live entertainment. The Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Walk highlights the weekend festivities.
Participants are encouraged to create or join teams through the Dempsey Challenge website to build camaraderie and assist their fundraising efforts. For more information visit
